Rules for the Dementia Mitt Art Project

No Indication of Time
I will have no access to a clock or timer and will not know how much time has passed or remains during the session.
  • If I ask, the only response will be: “The project lasts six hours.”
  • For tether or weight actions, I will only be told that they operate in five-minute increments.
No Direct Interaction with Chat
I will not see Twitch chat or directly interact with viewers.
  • The stream manager has full discretion to share messages or themes from chat with me if they feel it enhances the project.
  • I will not know the number of viewers, the identities of those present, or any live notifications (e.g., subscriptions or follows).
No Knowledge of Chat Actions
I will not be informed of chat commands or actions related to tether adjustments.
  • I will not know when a command is implemented or how long it remains active.
  • Stacked or overlapping commands will be managed by the stream manager to maintain balance and flow.
No Rest or Breaks
Once the session begins, I will not take any rest or breaks.
  • The mitts will remain on for the entire duration, and I will continue creating art without pause.
  • The handler may intervene if a break is deemed necessary for safety or if adjustments to the setup are required.
Submission to the Process
I will fully comply with all chat requests and project parameters established by the stream manager and handler.
  • I will not refuse any adjustments or commands made within these boundaries.
  • The handler and stream manager have complete control of the situation, while I remain a participant.
  • I acknowledge that If I show any disrespect to the stream manager or the handler at any time, they have the right to impose any stipulations to regain control of the project.
Handler Adjustments
The handler has the responsibility to ensure the mitts and tethers remain secure throughout the session.
  • If adjustments are necessary to maintain the integrity of the project, I will comply, even if I resist or attempt to remove the mitts.
  • The handler may also apply or adjust tension on the gait belt handles as part of the process.
  • The handler may also prohibit certain hand positions, such as attempting to turn my hand upside down or balling my hand in a fist.
  • The handler is responsible for preventing any damage, intentional or unintentional, to the mitts or the tethers.
Focus on Art Creation
The primary purpose of this project is to create art.
  • The tethers symbolize external control but will not be allowed to overwhelm the creative process.
  • My goal is to complete meaningful art pieces within the constraints, adapting as needed to overcome challenges.
Reflective Transparency
Throughout the session, I will narrate my thoughts, emotions, and challenges related to the artistic process.
  • I will focus on how the restrictions influence my creativity and how I adapt to them.
  • These reflections will connect the artistic journey to the project’s broader themes of autonomy and resilience.
Symbolic Representation
Every aspect of this project—including the mitts, tethers, weight, and gait belt—represents a deeper theme of control, assistance, and adaptation.
  • I will integrate these elements into the art-making process to amplify their symbolic impact.
  • The final artwork will embody the struggles and triumphs of creating under restriction.
